- MINUTES
- --------
-
- 1) Administrivia
-
- o Approval of the Minutes
-
- The minutes from the Teleconferences of February 1st and February
- 8th were approved.
-
- o Next Meeting
-
- The next IESG teleconference was scheduled for March 1st, from 11:30
- to 1:30 ET.
-
- 2) Protocol Actions
-
- o Directed ARP
-
- After consulting with the IPLPDN Working Group, it is clear this
- protocol is a product of that group. The proposal suffers from
- several technical flaws and the IESG was concerned that there is no
- specific interest in actually implementing and experimenting with
- this protocol. Acknowledging these shortcomings, the IESG approved
- this protocol for publication as Experimental. This protocol will
- clearly need additional work should it be proposed for
- standardization.
-
- ACTION: Vaudreuil -- Announce the approval of the Directed ARP
- specification as an Experimental Protocol.
-
- The IESG discussed the general case where a IETF Working Group may
- produce a specification for experimentation which has significant
- shortcomings.
-
- POSITION: A protocol which is intended to be experimental may be
- published as a IETF Working Group product even with known technical
- deficiencies.
-
- o NFS/RPC
-
- There is no action to report.
-
- o IP Addressing Guidelines
-
- Progress is being made on preparing the CIDR document set. The IESG
- was reminded that it is responsible for an Applicability Statement
- (AS) for CIDR.
-
- ACTION: Gross, Hinden: Write the Applicability Statement for CIDR.
-
- o X.500 DUA Metrics
-
- The IESG had no objection to the publication of this document as an
- informational product of the OSIDS Working Group.
-
- ACTION: Vaudreuil -- Announce the acceptance of the X.500 DUA Metrics
- document as an Informational document.
-
- o Tools RFC
-
- The IESG discussed this Network OSI Operations Working Group
- document. The document is partly a requirements document and partly
- a NOC Tools style catalogue of tools necessary to operate a CLNP
- internet. It was noted that this work would be a good candidate for
- a proposed standard "CLNP requirements" document.
-
- The title needs to be revised before it can be published as an RFC.
-
- ACTION: Vaudreuil - Request clarification from the Working Group
- chairman about the nature of this document. Communicate the IESG sense
- that this would be a good basis of a requirements document.
-
- 3) Technical Management Issues
-
- o Nomination Committee Request
-
- The IESG nomination committee requested clarification on an earlier
- IESG discussion as to whether the IESG facilitator and the IETF
- chairman should be the same person. The IESG discussed this and
- agreed that the IETF chairman should remain the chairman of the
- IESG. Secretariat help is available to delegate specific tasks as
- the chairman requires.
-
- POSITION: IESG chairman should be the IETF chairman. Secretariat help
- is available as needed and as delegated by the IETF chairman.
-
- ACTION: Coya - Further ponder the role of the IESG facilitator WRT to
- the IETF Secretariat and report thoughts to the IESG.
-
- o Network Management Area
-
- With the resignation of Chuck Davin, the IESG is without a Network
- Management Area Director. Besides the ongoing work on SNMP
- Evolution, there are a collection of MIBs that require review and
- processing for advancement. The IESG agreed that the IESG should be
- able to cover for the Network Management Area Director and should
- not wait for a new Area Director.
-
- ACTION: Vaudreuil -- Investigate the current status of the Network
- Management Area Directorate and investigate the process by which the
- various MIBS can be reviewed.
-
- o SNMP Version2
-
- The SNMP Version 2 protocol is nearing completion and is expected to
- be submitted to the IESG before Columbus. There continues to be a
- degree of controversy over the process and to a lesser degree the
- content of the protocol.
-
- ACTION: SCrocker, Piscitello - Poll the SNMP community for feedback on
- the process of SNMP Evolution. Report to the IESG.
-
- Two documents are of low quality and need to be rewritten, however
- the IESG was willing to allow the current documents to progress
- provided they are re-written before advancement to Draft Standard.
-
- o RIP Applicability Statement.
-
- No action to report.
-
- o Wide Area Routing with RIP
-
- No action to report
-
- o Delegation of Naming Authority for the US Domain
-
- Discussion on the delegation of authority for the US domain was deferred.
-
- 4) RFC Editor Actions
-
- o SNMP over Multi-Protocols
-
- There was no objection from the working group or authors to the
- elimination of the text in each referring to SNMP Security.
-
- ACTION: Piscitello - Communicate to the RFC Editor the IESG willingness
- to have the SNMP over Foo documents edited before publication to
- eliminate the SNMP Security references.
-
- 5) Working Group Actions
-
- o IP Security
-
- No Progress to Report
-
- o Integrated Directory Services (ids)
-
- The formation of the Integrated Directory Services Working Group was
- approved by the IESG.
-
- ACTION: Vaudreuil -- Announce the formation of the Integrated Directory
- Services Working Group.
-
- o Network Training Materials (trainmat)
-
- The formation of the Training Materials Working Group was approved
- by the IESG.
-
- ACTION: Vaudreuil -- Announce the formation of the Network Training
- Materials Working Group.
-
- o Remote Conferencing
-
- The Remote Conferencing work is being carried out in several single
- focus working groups. As additional requirements arise other
- Working Groups will be formed. No further action is required.
-
- o Secure FTP
-
- It is not clear whether this effort should be chartered in the
- Applications or Security Area. While the focus is intended to be on
- security aspects, other changes to FTP are possible and should be
- coordinated in the Applications Area. No resolution was reached in
- the short time this was discussed.
-
-
- Appendix -- Summary of Action Items Assigned
-
- ACTION: Vaudreuil -- Announce the approval of the Directed ARP
- specification as an Experimental Protocol.
-
- ACTION: Gross, Hinden: Write the Applicability Statement for CIDR.
-
- ACTION: Vaudreuil -- Announce the acceptance of the X.500 DUA Metrics
- document as an Informational document.
-
- ACTION: Vaudreuil - Request clarification from the Working Group
- chairman about the nature of this document. Communicate the IESG sense
- that this would be a good basis of a requirements document.
-
- ACTION: Coya - Further ponder the role of the IESG facilitator WRT to
- the IETF Secretariat and report thoughts to the IESG.
-
